On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the passing of Tony Wilson, Walthamstow Rock n Roll Book Club present 'Tony Wilson - What was and will be' at Mirth, Marvel and Maud in Walthamstow, London E17 on Thursday 10 August 2017.

"A decade after Tony Wilson's untimely passing we examine the man, the myth and his legacy.

"Paul Morley writes: "Without Wilson there may well have been in some form Joy Division, and Factory, and New Order, and the Hacienda, and Happy Mondays. There may well have been Peter Saville's dream designs, and Martin Hannett's timeless production, and a Manchester that managed to move on from its sad post-industrial decline. But none of it would have been so far-fetched, so dramatic and so fantastic."

"Ahead of the publication of Morley's long-awaited biography he will give a talk about the man and his book.

"Kevin Cummins who more than most helped turn Ian Curtis from man to Icon and made defining images of bands on Factory, Manchester and beyond will discuss Tony through the lens.

"From Boethius to Debord via Marx, Factory was the most consciously philosphical of record labels and Wilson never short of a well chosen aphorism. We have asked Dr Jennifer Otter-Bickerdike, culture critic, writer, broadcaster, author of three books on fan culture and Joy Division to explain.

"Our panel of friends and occasional foes will discuss the Tony they knew and imagine what he would be doing today. Chaired by John Robb, former Buzzcocks manager Richard Boon, Kevin Cummins, James Endeacott and Dr Jennifer will discuss the legacy."

[UPDATED] Paul Morley returns to the Purcell Room on London's South Bank this Thursday 16 June for the second of his Tony Wilson Interviews. Morley will continue his exploration of the man Tony Wilson in the eyes of those who knew him.

Special musical guests for the evening are Kevin Hewick (who will be playing part of a 4-song cycle he is developing about his personal view of Factory, the people and the legacy) and OMD who will be playing as a duo (McCluskey/Humphreys).

Mancunian poet Mike Garry will also reprise his poem Saint Anthony which he performed at the first of these events in October 2010.

The event, which is notionally part of Meltdown 2011, is pretty much sold out.

Paul Morley continues his tribute to Tony Wilson at the Purcell Rooms in London on Thursday 16 June as part of Meltdown 2011. He will be talking to some of those who knew and worked with Tony Wilson in a similar vein to the event held last October 2010. As well as featuring live music and poet Mike Garry, the evening also includes unreleased footage by Carol Morley, who filmed Anthony H Wilson in Manchester in 2005. At time of going to press the exact nature of the live music element this time round is still to be confirmed.

Vini Reilly played and talked with Paul Morley at a special spoken word event at the Purcell Room in London last Wednesday. The event was part of Morley's ongoing preparations for a forthcoming book about Tony Wilson. The other guests were poet Mike Garry and Richard Boon (ex-Buzzcocks manager).

The interviews were interspersed with previously unseen footage shot by Paul's sister Carol of Tony Wilson (c. 2005) in preparation for a film about a Joy Division tribute band from China. Undoubted star of the show was William the dog (recently the winning answer of a Cerysmatic competition) who shows great enthusiasm for barking and less for getting back into the car!

Wilson and Morley will be focusing on the Manchester punk scene's DIY aesthetic, reminiscing about regular haunts, recalling unfortunate fashion statements and debating the impact the Sex Pistols' gigs had on a huge array of Manchester bands.

The discussion promises to offer a distinctly acerbic, first hand perspective on one of the most important periods in Manchester’s cultural history, and will conclude with an in-depth question and answer session.

Paul Morley's most recent book is 'Words and Music' but before that came 'Nothing'. This short passage features Joy Division:

"It was the Sex Pistols tonguing out of the mouths of Stooges that harassed the group that became Joy Division into galactic north-west technological rock and roll action, and they adapted to and pretty quickly transcended this frenzied coincidence of The Sex Pistols, Kraftwerk, The Doors, Brian Eno and Television (and you never know Peter Hammill and Black Sabbath, or J. G. Ballard and Albert Camus, or Franz Kafka and Chic, or Neu and Isaac Asimov, or Mott the Hoople and Dostoevsky ...).

And here... Factory Records: "What about their record company, Factory? Not so much a record company as a state of mind, an organisation in constant graceful disarray, and a company of free-thinking sub-maniacs who were responsible for pushing and pulling Joy Division through their short, frantic career".
