Manchester Spins, the independent, non‐profit making, promotional recording project from Yvonne G. Rybka Erskine and Manchester based artists, launches on Record Store Day with the release of its first Limited Edition EP featuring Ash Mountain, in conjunction with an exhibition of work by noted Factory Records vinyl sleeve designer Trevor Johnson.

Both Ash Mountain and Josh Lisuik will be performing tracks from the EP throughout the day. The limited edition coloured vinyl will also be on sale for a special price of only 5.00 GBP.

"Paris Invites The World" forms part of the Fête du Graphisme (Festival of Graphic Design) being held in Paris during January and February 2014. Peter Saville is one the graphic designers who has been asked to contribute three posters which showcase the best of their work in the world of music graphics.

The featured posters are Unknown Pleasures, Halluçienda and Movement. I was fortunate enough to help out with supplying the last of these thanks in turn to the kindness of a fellow Factory fan a few years ago who gave it to me.

Fête du Graphisme opens on 29 January and more information is available (in French only) at fetedugraphisme.org.

Ben Kelly, the designer behind FAC 51 The Hacienda, FAC 201 Dry and FAC 251 The Factory HQ, appears in conversation with fellow designer Andrew Stevens in Selfridges Manchester Exchange Square as part of the Festival of Imagination on Wednesday 22 January 2014 from 6-8pm.

The pair will explore creative collaboration and how it can benefit a design project.

GQ.com's Daniel Phelan interviews Peter Saville in Shoreditch about his personal style and recent projects which include Kanye West's logo and loads of deconstructed logos for Lacoste's birthday.

Saville says "The interesting thing is that people are coming up to me and saying 'Peter, what would you like to do?' They're not coming to me with design problems. A personal mission to tidy up the world is not on my agenda. I've done that, that's what I did at Factory. I see things all the time that could be better, but I turn the other way. There's plenty of other people to attend to that."

We also get to learn how Peter got Marc Jacobs to make him his favourite jeans in white.

The often-reliable Soul Jazz Records label has recently issued another mahoosive tome dedicated to record sleeve imagery, in particular punk, new wave and U.S. garage-rock. Entitled 'Punk 45 - Kill The Hippies! Kill Yourself!', the hefty volume weighs 2kg, comes dressed in an eye-catching orange cover and includes over 350 pages of punk-singles cover art from 1976-80, all edited and forwarded by Jon Savage and Stuart Baker.

Of interest to Factory fans are interviews with Peter Saville, A Certain Ratio's Martin Moscrop and Cabaret Voltaire's Richard H Kirk, plus actual-size facsimiles of classic Factory-related 45s such as 'Transmission' and 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Joy Division, plus ACR, Section 25 and a few Les Disques du Crépuscule favourites from the early days, as well as hundreds of other luminaries of snotty new-wave and gob-rock such as Slaughter and the Dogs, Metal Urbain, Buzzcocks, The Skids, Robert Rental, XTC and the wonderfully-named Those Naughty Lumps.

The RRP is £25 (£20 from the Sounds Of The Universe shop in Broadwick Street, London) and is supported by a CD of the same title, comprised of various underground punk singles from the States. It's suffixed with the magic words, 'Volume One' which suggests the second volume may include a few UK nuggets.

Hamish Muir, one of the founding partners of 8vo, presents a talk about Octavo, the subscription-only design journal published from 1986 to 1992. This will take place at the JWT Building in London on Thursday 28 November from 7pm. For more details see the event page at Typocircle.com.

In the fully-illustrated talk, Hamish will cover the development, design, production and closure of the Octavo project. This will include a rarely seen reconstruction of part of the final CD-ROM issue from 1992.

The packaging for the previously announced Factory Benelux sandpaper sleeve edition of The Return of The Durutti Column has changed slightly. Instead of a square deboss there is now a die-cut of the early Factory Records logo that first appeared on FAC 13.

Peter Saville has designed the prints and typography for a new collection of shoes made for the Adidas label Y-3 by Yohji Yamamoto.

Dezeen.com reports that Saville has drawn inspiration from "the vastness of the internet, culling images and words from online forums, social media, and personal blogging platforms".

Saville, you may recall, previously worked with Adidas on the Adicolor project, resulting in a tracksuit and the G2 hi-tops. In this video he talks their association.

After finally catching up with the excellent Vaughan Oliver/23 Envelope monogram 'visceral pleasures' by Rick Poynor (think FAC 461 for 4AD if you're not familiar) a paragraph which compared Oliver's working influence to Peter Saville caught my eye:

"Oliver is a designer whose most characteristic work is about music. At their most expressive, his designs embody his intense emotional responses to his sensations as a listener. This is by no means always the case with designers of music graphics. Reid Miles, creator in the 1960s of many classic covers for the Blue Note jazz label, never had much enthusiasm for hard bop, even though fans regard his graphic rhythms as perfectly in sync with the music. Peter Saville, designer of sleeves for Factory Records, was engaged more by the subcultural, stylistic and fashion aspects of the post-punk milieu than by the music itself, and this detachment can be seen in the conceptual control of his designs. For Oliver, the connection with music is much more visceral and intimate. Music is a way of twisting the moment, leaving the mundane reality of the here and now, the world of bills on doormat, and attaining a more vital state of being beyond rational understanding, beyond the comfortable habits and orderly procedures of everyday life, where reality can be experienced anew, as if looking back from the other side."

In other words, Vaughan Oliver actually listened to the music but Peter Saville didn't.

Following on from the archive photos of the original FAC 251 Factory HQ in Manchester designed by Ben Kelly, we thought it an opportune moment for a round-up of his more recent work.

Media Space, South Kensington

Ben Kelly Design (BKD) has designed the new Media Space facilities in London's world famous Science Museum in South Kensington. The world-class suite of multi-functional facilities including a gallery and space for workshops is housed in the museum's former Printing and Printmaking gallery and opened on 21 September 2013.



The Cheapside Hoard for Museum of London

This is a new exhibition at the Museum of London in the City of London which features a set of historic gemstones and jewels which has not been displayed in one place for around one century. BKD designed the exhibition space which is open to the public until 27 April 2014.

BIMM, Manchester

Ben Kelly designed the interior of the new BIMM (Brighton Institute of Modern Music) in Manchester which launched recently. BIMM is a music college that offers fully accredited, intensive music courses in Manchester for individuals who are committed to a career in music or the music industry. Resplendent in his trademark blue and International Orange, Ben spoke about BIMM in June 2013 in the video below.

The new paper version of Wallpaper magazine features a limited edition subscriber cover by Linder Sterling and fashion photographer Paolo Roversi. This is a collage of a 1982 portrait of Linder, photographed by Christina Birrer, and a 2013 shot by Roversi.

Joy Division's FACT 10 Unknown Pleasures cover designed by Peter Saville has been rendered on a 3D printer with the plans for how to do it published alongside (via BoingBoing [->]).

However, although the age of the 3D printer is only a few years young, this isn't the first time the classic cover has been modelled in 3D. Morph did it in 2006 in moulded latex in a series of exclusive (and pricey) one-off editions.
