In a bumper week for fans of Monteverdi there are three different releases featuring the work of the composer. I Fagiolini, the one-time Factory Classical artists under director Robert Hollingsworth, bring us 'Flaming Heart' (Chandos) which gets four stars and a favourable review by Andrew Clements in the Guardian. Irked purists might argue that this is not "their first Monteverdi disc" as this title belongs to Facd 316 'The Art of Monteverdi'.

David 'Pottsy' Potts (ex-Monaco) has a new E.P. modestly titled 'I'm The Greatest' with an album 'Coming Up For Air' to follow next year. He spoke to BBC Manchester about his new work which will come out on his own label.

Details of a short European tour by OMD in 2007 have emerged (thanks to omd.uk.com). It kicks off in Dublin on 13 May, then Glasgow, Liverpool and London before moving on to Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. The shows will feature the original "classic" line-up of Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys with Martin Cooper and Malcolm Holmes playing Architecture and Morality in its entirety along with other material.

Andy McCluskey, talking to Scream City (3rd issue soon come), earlier in the year, said "it would be nice to kind of remind people where we came from: 'Architecture and Morality', the Arts, The Factory, and Peter Saville" That's where we started. That's our history. We did some pretty radical, yet successful stuff. Also, this Autumn is twenty-five years since 'Architecture and Morality' was released."

On that last note, a special reissue of 'Architecture and Morality' is also planned for release.

According to drummer Vin Cassidy "it's not meant as a replacement for the section25.com one, just a subsite to run alongside it. It gives us a chance to post concert stuff, live mp3 downloads, news, general tittle tattle, etc, which may not find its way on to the main site."

Caroline True Records are back with a great new release from Manicured Noise and their website - www.carolinetruerecords.co.uk - has been revamped.

The Northern Stories - 1978/80 gathers together for the first time almost all of Manicured Noise's recordings including their two singles for Pre/Charisma Records, a BBC session and a wealth of unreleased material.

This enigmatic act formed in Manchester in 1978, the very early days of the band remain a mystery.

Inspired by New York, Television, Ornette Coleman, Talking Heads, August Darnells' Machine, French Soundtracks and Disco Chic-along with a nod to Northern Soul and Moroder, the band cut a singular groove. Early hours inspiration from 70's cop and Kung-Fu soundtracks were incorporated, a good 10 years or more before Massive Attack and Portishead did the same. In doing so, Manicured Noise created a sound that's still difficult to pin down.

"Factory have expressed an interest in the Distractions, the Negatives and current musicians' favourites, Manicured Noise. (Ask Vic Goddard, the Banshees; Wire what they think of M Noise. Politely of course". (Paul Morley NME Dec 1978)

Northern Stories 1978/80 comes with rare memorabilia and sleevenotes by Steven Walsh of Manicured Noise in a deluxe 8-page digi-pack.

Also, free with the initial 100 copies is a limited edition numbered poster with original artwork from the album and original archive pics of Manchester 1977/78 by England's Dreaming author Jon Savage.

Touted as a "contrarian pop genius" by The New York Times, Stephin Merritt has recorded seven albums with his band, The Magnetic Fields, including '69 Love Songs'. Recently, Mr. Merritt turned to theater, collaborating with director Chen Zhi-Zheng at the 2003 and 2005 Lincoln Center Festivals. He is joined in conversation with novelist (and part-time musician) Rick Moody. Mr. Moody's novels include 'The Ice Storm' and 'The Diviners'.
