Joy Division - the poster competition
The official website for the Joy Division documentary which is released this Friday in the UK ran a competition a few weeks ago to pick the official promotional poster from two options.

Voting was clearly in favour of the "blue" version but it seems the "gold" or "Lord of the Rings" version was chosen. What can be happening? I think we should be told...

THE PIECE NEED NOT BE BUILT
In 1968 Lawrence Weiner, one of the key figures of Conceptual art, formulated his famous Declaration of Intent:

1. The artist may construct the piece.
2. The piece may be fabricated.
3. The piece need not be built.

Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist the decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the occasion of receivership.

On 2 February 2008 Lawrence Weiner discussed his work with art historian and critic John Slyce at Tate Modern in London to coincide with his recent retrospective AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and his 2008 exhibition at the Lisson Gallery in London which ran until March. The event is archived as a webcast at tate.org.

Perhaps not too much to interest the casual FAC follower only familiar with his record covers and posters for Factory Records but for those keen to find out more about Weiner or who simply have never seen him talk before this is a great opportunity.

Bass (How Low Can You Go?)
On the inside back page of Saturday's Guardian guide (only in the print edition it would seem), Peter Hook tells it how it is (and how it was):

On New Order's money - "If Tony Wilson had fucked off to Brazil and spent it on cocaine and hookers I could have understood that but the fact that he frittered it away was a bit challenging really."

On playing the bass - "My advice is: wear it low, play it high. Although, as my chiropractor keeps telling me, judging by my cracked discs and nerve trouble, I shouldn't have."

On his DJing: "I've never claimed to be a DJ, I'm a celebrity."

FAC 51 T-Shirt competition results
We asked you "What were the four ingredients of a 'Zero Hour' cocktail, as served in the Gay Traitor Bar?"

The answer (which smart FAC 51 fans would have found on the Gay Traitor page sandwiched between a Killer Zombie and Death in the Afternoon) is Brandy, Apricot Brandy, Creme de Menthe and Pernod.

And the envelope please...

The winner (who will receive a complete set of brand new limited edition FAC 51 The Haçienda official t-shirts in the size of their choice) is Dave Stephenson. Congratulations to Dave. We'll be in touch. Thanks too to everyone who entered the competition.

Official, limited and available FAC 51 T-Shirts are also available to buy from Slipstream Stores' online Hacienda shop. They're better than a meat pie.

Sauron's city-centre offices
Pies and Prejudice: In Search of the North is the latest book by Stuart Maconie in which he goes in search of the North of England. It came out last year but has just been reprinted in a new cover. Maconie's first book 'Cider With Roadies' contained some choice words about Factory Records and so does this one.

For example, on the New Factory HQ he says: "I've lost many an afternoon lounging in its weirdly uncomfortable chairs or around the boardroom table not interviewing Happy Mondays, getting lost on my way to the toilets through a stone warren of corridors and high forbidding doors straight out of Mordor. If Sauron had a city-centre office, it would have looked like this."

The cover also features a nice illustration with some factories on it.
