Haçienda Good Friday 2014 @ Sankeys MCRFAC 51 The Haçienda returns to the resurrected Sankeys on Good Friday with a line-up featuring many of the original DJs that shaped the club including headliners Pickering & Park and Greg Wilson, Hewan Clarke and Jon Dasilva.
Graeme Park and Mike Pickering will play both individually and together as they present their finest records of then and now. Hewan Clarke's set of will feature early Eighties cuts whilst original resident Greg Wilson brings his sublime selection of remixes and edits to the event, with both looking to highlight the musical history of the Haçienda in their sets.
Acid house and Balearic supremos, Jon Dasilva and Justin Robertson, who shaped the independent, open minded, soundtrack to the Haçienda and Manchester in the last Eighties and early Nineties with Hot, Most Excellent, Spacefunk and more, also drop by to provide their great tunes selection and upfront choices to the event.
Finishing up the extensive bill, Manchester Underground’s Russ rocks up with his vinyl while Herbie Saccani delivers one of his much praised warm up sets to kickstart what is set to be another great event for FAC 51 in its Manchester hometown.
Tickets available now priced from 10.00 GBP Earlybird via Sankeys, Skiddle, Ticket Arena

Still BreathingLast night saw the London launch of 'Still Breathing - The True Adventures of the Donnelly Brothers' by Anthony and Christopher Donnelly with Simon Spence and interviews by Becky Seward. A healthy troupe of southerners and northerners (including Kevin Cummins, Mike Garry - who performed Saint Anthony and a new poem to commemorate the book) braved the lusty decadent delights of imperial Hackney for a night of planned (and not-so-planned-but-nevertheless-entertaining) entertainment at Casa Negra to celebrate the publication of the book about the remarkable story of the two brothers (the self-styled "Smooth Sex Pistols of the fashion industry") who brought you Gio-Goi, Your Own and much more in between.
The Donnellys had close family ties to Factory Records - their sister Tracey worked for Factory Records as PR Manager (and now works her magic at Donnelly 24) and at the Hacienda/Swing. Her "interview" for the job is famously documented in FAC 229! The Music Week Factorial thus: "There was me and a few other girls on the shortlist, and when we met up at The Hacienda, Tony Wilson sat me down with the others and then told them that I'd got the job, and then proceeded to talk to them about their Hacienda jobs and not a word to me about my new job! They'd already decided. Tony bought me a drink after and then said, 'see you in the office on Monday'."
Oliver Wilson's Foreword explains quite succinctly the significance: "Along with my dad, you had perhaps two dozen other people who made Manchester, 'Madchester'. Chris and Anthony were in at the ground floor on everything...".
Other Factory-related entrants in the extensive Preface include Alan Erasmus ("It seemed like a good idea at the time."), Mike Pickering ("Still lovable scallywags, but they're clever in their business dealings"), Keith Allen ("My first words to Anthony were 'Can you untie me, please' We have been close friends ever since."), Bez ("You can come from nothing and build something important that's relevant to the rest of the world".), Shaun Ryder ("Why not have a go. You know what we like to wear."), Pat Carroll ("They were fucking hilarious and proper ambitious") and many more.
The book covers the whole story from the Donnelly family first coming over from Ireland, setting up home and being scallywags in Wythenshawe, the rise and fall (and rise again in 2005) of Gio-Goi and now the advent of Your Own, all told in words of the main protagonists. The book is a veritable Who's Who of Manchester and it's a right rollicking read.

Hacienda 30Disc 1 is Graeme Park's baby and features upfront UK and US garage and uplifting house - indeed, the opening track in this mix, Let The Music Lift You Up by Darlene Lewis, sets the tone perfectly for the next 70-odd minutes with similar classics such as Inner City's Share My Love, MK's Burning, Shawn Christopher's Make My Love (the days when the name Stonebridge appeared on all the hot remixes of the age) and the underrated slammer, Rushing by Loni Clark.
Mike Pickering takes up the knobs on Disc 2 and edges it with a ripe selection of UK bleep, Chicago house and deeper techno that ranges from Sweet Exorcist's killer Testone, Hashim's must-have Al-Naafyish and Pickering's own Carino from his T-Coy project. There isn't a dud among these.
Somehow, Peter Hook's Disc 3 melting pot of Raze, De'Lacy, New Order, The Stone Roses, Robin S and Happy Mondays bubbles like a student night should, before getting all grown up with Strings of Life, Salsa House and Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use).
The release comes with a specially designed booklet featuring previously-unseen photography and a focus on the club's 30th Anniversary Party that took place in the Haçienda Apartments' car park on 21 May 2012 - 30 years to the day after the club first opened.

Hacienda 30 is out now via New State Music on iTunes (UK), Amazon (UK) and other outlets.

Hold and give and do it at the right timeWorld Cup Fever again grips the nation and to celebrate Cerysmatic Factory runs through its Factory Football First XI:
1. Factory issued a red t-shirt in 1991 which bore the fourth generation 'Factory' logo and the Manchester United crest. Frank Brinkhuis has a picture of one in his excellent Image Banque.
2. The Hand of God - Factory issued a promotional football to as part of its "advertising campaign" for this New Order single (FAC 193). 30 Adidas Aztec Maya soccer balls were made with the Touched By The Hand Of God graphic design (as found on the 12" inner sleeve) printed on them, but no Factory number.
3. FAC 293 'World in Motion' - This was the official England World Cup song by England New Order and it got to number one in the UK charts. England got to the semi-final that year. This year the official song was by Embrace and it only got to number 29 in the UK charts. Time will tell how far England go this time.
4. The silky skills - Vini Reilly, Johnny Marr and Jez Kerr were all very good footballers in their youth and were even offered trials with City or United.
5. The theme tune #1 - New Order provided the theme music for the football show 'Best & Marsh' presented by George Best and Rodney Marsh (the latter being the nearest this list gets to any QPR connection!). The tune was released as one of the b-sides on 'Round & round' (FAC 263).
6. The theme tune #2 - 'Moody Places' by Northside was for a long time the theme music for ITV's Soccer Night presented by the legendary Elton Welsby. The track was the b-side to 'Shall We Take A Trip?' (FAC 268).
7. The protest song - 'We'll Never Die' was a single by Hanky Park vs Peter Hook released in protest at the Glazers' takeover at Manchester United.
8. The chance meeting - Rob Gretton met Mike Pickering after they fell in a hedge together following a City match.
9. So farewell then - Lifelong City season ticket holder Kevin Cummins published a book of photographs called 'We're Not Really Here: Manchester City's Final Season at Maine Road'.
10. The divided loyalties - The following is from 'Torn Apart: The Life of Ian Curtis' by Mick Middles and Lindsay Reade: Although Ian (Curtis) has been portrayed as a Manchester City fan, his family cast doubts on this. "I wouldn't have put him down as a City fan," said Carole (his sister). As a young boy he was more of a United fan. He got their programmes. Debbie (Curtis) says he was a City fan but she's got a picture of him in her book wearing a United top."
11. The cash-in? - Warners approached New Order during the 1990 World Cup with a treatment for a proposed Heinz Tomato Ketchup TV advert using a rewritten E for England soundtrack. The advert was to feature lookalike England players (including a 'Gazza' squirting water from his eyes) playing ketchup keepy-uppy to the strains of "We're eating for England....". Alas (?) it never happened...
