Moby shows love for MovementIn one case, his choice of artist shouldn't be a huge surprise but perhaps his choice of album is - New Order's often-forgotten Movement (FACT 50). One of his all-time Top 10, Moby says in the article compiled by Luke Turner, "When I was 14 or 15-years-old I was fully ensconced on the cult of Ian Curtis, so when I got Movement I listened to it and tried to decode it... how many songs were influenced by Ian Curtis, how many songs were written by Ian Curtis, were they trying to communicate with Ian from beyond the grave." You can read the whole article here, in which he chooses other albums by D.A.F., B.E.F., O.M.D. and others of a less-abbreviated persuasion.
Moby's love of Joy Division has been previously highlighted after the electronic pioneer had a crack at New Dawn Fades for a single b-side some twenty years ago, a game effort we recall (you'll find it on the standard CD-single version of Feeling So Real or the easier-to-find I Like To Score album).
Given his choice of favourite New Order recording, it should come as no surprise that Moby appeared on stage in Seattle with Peter Hook and the Light on their current rapturously-received North American tour. Hooky will be returning to the UK in the autumn for a tour with both Movement and Power Corruption and Lies in tow. Read about the tour here.
Talking of Hook, it appears he has recently incurred minor wrath from some frustrated fans in the States. Several punters opted to decline from arriving early to see the support band, Slaves Of Venus, on the US tour, without first realizing that it was Peter Hook and the Light under an assumed name performing a raft of Joy Division songs as a bonus! All of which only serves as an important lesson - sometimes it's worth turning up that bit earlier to catch what could be a truly surprising and decent support act.

From Movement to Power, Corruption and LiesTwo church visits in one day! One a funeral, one a celebration - both chances to remember old friends.
Unlike The Light's earlier Joy Division Reduxes, this one was never going to be easy - charting the transition between the first two New Order albums: Movement to PC&L, Curtis to Sumner, live to 'sequence'.
But Hooky's band manage to pull it off again with a vocal strength that belies the obvious range difference twixt Sumner and Hook, a stunning guitar prowess that was never there in the original live event, a subtle interplay between the duelling basses (funny - I seem to remember nowt but complaints from Hooky the producer/engineer when faced with two bass players!) and the overall confidence of a well-toured, bedded-in backline.
Perhaps it was time, place and occasion (or old age) but I found myself revisiting not the studio recordings of these classic albums but all those live occasions related to them: gigs attended - Squat, Comanche, Ritz, Brum; tapes collected - Tiffany's, Utrecht (or was it Amsterdam); videos watched - Glastonbury 81, BBC 84; Sessions heard - Peel 81 & 2.
Then I realised what was missing then and is present in abundance now: Enthusiasm. From everyone. Finally.

Unknown Pleasures in print and on tourSpeaking about the book, Hooky said "It's very strange. Over the years Joy Division has become a huge part of music culture. A lot of people think they know what happened. But they don't. Anyone who's ever written a book or made a film about Joy Division, unless they were sat in that van or car with us, they don't know anything about it. Me, Barney, Steve, Ian, Rob, Twinny, Terry and Dave. Only us lot know what really happened..."
The book's cover art is based on Peter Saville's original classic black and white album cover.

20 May 2012
Joy Division - Le Terme? The set matched the disjointed original album perfectly: powerful and previously unreleased/overlooked Joy Division tracks (The Only Mistake, Something Must Break) were added to The Light's now-enormous repertoire whilst earlier Warsaw tracks (The Kill, Walked In Line) and the Velvet cover version (Sister Ray) were added for completeness.
But it's the crossover points, when tracks from the Unknown Pleasures and Closer shows - now honed to powerful near-perfection through constant touring to obscure, surprised and eternally grateful foreign audiences - drop almost randomly into the set, that the band comes alive and the place explodes in mass catharsis.
The best is saved for last, though, with an excursion into New (Order) territory - 12 bass strings combine for The Him, Dreams Never End and a sublime Doubts Even Here.
The Light are alternating Unknown Pleasures and Closer around the UK in the next few weeks, then beyond. Festival headline/own tent stuff. Must see.
