Peter Hook explains why he loves the Hacienda and DJing in general in an interview with the Manchester Evening News.

Meanwhile, New Order headline a special John Peel tribute gig at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank on 12 October. Also on the bill are The Fall and Super Furry Animals plus many others. However, there was very little advance notice of the gig and tickets have already sold out.

The next few weeks will be very busy for New Order. The new single 'Waiting for the Sirens' Call' is out in the UK this coming Monday and is swiftly followed by the retrospective dvd 'Item' and the compilation album 'Singles'. Not only that but 'Blue Monday' has also been reissued in the USA on 12" vinyl with a slightly-cheaper-than-original sleeve.

According to Joy Division Central the British actress Samantha Morton is to play the role of Deborah Curtis in the forthcoming movie about the life of Ian Curtis which goes under the working title 'Control' and is being directed by Anton Corbijn.

More in an occasional series on the FAC numbers that didn't make it. In these two cases, as far as can be determined at this stage, a FAC number was not, even notionally, allocated to the items.

i) TILLER BOYS: Big Noise from the Jungle (single)

A single intended/recorded (in January 1979) for Factory Records, later released on New Hormones in March 1980. More from the liner notes to the recent Eric Random release ('Subliminal') on LTM:

"...a teenage Random first recorded as part of The Tiller Boys, an experimental trio formed with Buzzcock Pete Shelley and drummer Francis Cookson. Often referenced, yet seldom heard, the group reflected shared Krautrock / Fripp and Eno avant-rock preferences and were a regular feature on Manc-centric post-punk bills in 1978/79, making their live debut supporting Joy Division at the Factory (Russell) Club on 9 June 1978, a gig immortalised on Peter Saville's iconic Fac 1 poster.

The Tiller Boys also supported Joy Division and Cabaret Voltaire at the Factory on 20 October, Gang of Four in York, and cut a single intended for Factory Records at Arrow Studio in January 1979, although these tracks - three slices of pounding percussion and Neu! - like guitar clangour - were destined not to appear on the new Manchester indie ..... New Hormones proved a bold and eclectic label. Its second vinyl release (ORG 3) came courtesy of The Tiller Boys, whose posthumous Factory extended play 7" (now titled Big Noise from the Jungle) was released in March 1980."

ii) THE FACTORY EDITIONS (Book[s])

This was to have been a "set of three books" as mentioned the NME 18 October 1980, which lists Factory's "autumn worksheet", including a number of the "usual suspects" (Joy Division 'Atmosphere' 12", A Certain Ratio 'Flight' 12", Crispy Ambulance 'Deaf' 10", 'A Factory Quartet', plus releases by John Dowie, The Names, Minny Pops, Section 25, JD 'Transmission' 12", New Order 'untitled single', ESG single [Factory press description: "PiL meets Motown on the wrong side of the Triborough Bridge!"] and the first Factory video) and then, tucked away at the very end of the very last line...

"... and a series of three books, the 'FACTORY EDITIONS'."

An exhibition entitled 'Rochdale Rocks - a history of popular music in Rochdale from Middleton to Milnrow' opens at the Touchstones Centre, Rochdale on 22 October 2005. Clint Boon of Inspiral Carpets, who went to Art College in Rochdale, will open the exhibition.

The exhibition will encompass: The Deeply Vale festivals of the 1970s, Rochdale recording studios including Cargo, Suite Sixteen and John Peel's Dandelion studios and much more.

Bands and artists that came to Rochdale to record such as The Fall, Joy Division, The Teardrop Explodes, The Durutti Column, Section 25, New Order et al.

The exhibition will feature record sleeves, photos, and written anecdotes about the legendary Rochdale scene.

The film is by Ken Hollings, Graham Massey and Howard Walmsley. Dr X was previously a performance for text, electronic sound and digital images that made its debut at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in 2004 and was later followed by a show at The Green Room in Manchester.

Pere Ubu are doing a mini-tour of Europe including the UK and Ireland which comes to Manchester on Thursday 22 September. Special guest support comes from none other than Twenty Four Hours, the "solo" project of Jez Kerr out of A Certain Ratio. The latest issue of Grafik magazine (#132, Fashion Special) features a new interview with Peter Saville that concentrates on his time working for the fashion industry (Yohji Yamamoto, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, et al). Saville proclaims that he no longer "does" fashion or buys white Levi's jeans (they don't make 'em like they used to so he buys Helmut Lang's at 100 quid a pop). Speaking on his other day job as Creative Director for Manchester City Council he says "I don't really like sitting in a room full of councillors. For a couple of days each week it's interesting, but I certainly couldn't do it all the time."

When Patrick McGuinness appeared on Soccer AM (alongside Manchester heroes Elbow) last Saturday morning he revealed that commentary on one episode featured on the forthcoming dvd releases of 'Max and Paddy's Road to Nowhere' is provided by none other than Shaun Ryder and Bez out of Happy Mondays. He promised that it will be entertaining!

The tailpiece of the September 2005 edition of MOJO magazine is a concise and amusing history of Black Grape by Shaun Ryder (as told to Ben Machell). Among the delights, Shaun explains how Black Grape got started: "[February 1993] After the Mondays split, I told everyone I was leaving the music business. The rest of the band was saying anything to get into the music papers. Me and Bez just kept our mouths shut, and within a day of the Mondays finishing, we got together with Kermit and a couple of others round my house in Didsbury and started jamming in my living room."
