FAC 181 The Mad F*ckers was a "youth exploitation" movie, with a budget of $2,500,000. Production started July 1987 and was aborted in 1992. This would appear to be a test or draft for some aspect of a promotional campaign which would have surfaced before the eventual campaign.

The Bailey Brothers were Keith Jobling and Phil Shotton who also worked extensively with Happy Mondays.

FAC 338 Want A Virgin (aka Cool Idea) was a single which Northside recorded and which was intended for their second album. However, neither the single nor the album were released.

Dermo explains to Cerysmatic Factory what the single was about:

"The lyrics I wrote to the song are about a young man who decides to do a bank robbery on his own, (thinking that way he'd have less chance of being caught) in the hope of living a better lifestyle. He has no intentions of hurting anybody else, it's just that he's hurting so much himself. The lyrics were influenced by the song Bank Robber by The Clash and while I was growing up in Manchester, the attitudes of certain people that I knew. Want A Virgin is a refrain that I used (lifted off another Yellowman track of the same name) at the beginning of the song to emphasise it being somebody's first attempt, let's say his debut as a bank robber. Cool Idea being how his mind was working, in other words, it would be a cool idea to do a robbery, hurt no one, get away with it and lead a better life.

"The music is typical Northside but a bit heavier sounding in the guitars. Rex Sergeant (RIP) was working with us, producing this at Suite 16. I have a DAT copy of the song but it was never officially released on tape etc for Factory."

More in an occasional series on the FAC numbers that didn't make it. In these two cases, as far as can be determined at this stage, a FAC number was not, even notionally, allocated to the items.

i) TILLER BOYS: Big Noise from the Jungle (single)

A single intended/recorded (in January 1979) for Factory Records, later released on New Hormones in March 1980. More from the liner notes to the recent Eric Random release ('Subliminal') on LTM:

"...a teenage Random first recorded as part of The Tiller Boys, an experimental trio formed with Buzzcock Pete Shelley and drummer Francis Cookson. Often referenced, yet seldom heard, the group reflected shared Krautrock / Fripp and Eno avant-rock preferences and were a regular feature on Manc-centric post-punk bills in 1978/79, making their live debut supporting Joy Division at the Factory (Russell) Club on 9 June 1978, a gig immortalised on Peter Saville's iconic Fac 1 poster.

The Tiller Boys also supported Joy Division and Cabaret Voltaire at the Factory on 20 October, Gang of Four in York, and cut a single intended for Factory Records at Arrow Studio in January 1979, although these tracks - three slices of pounding percussion and Neu! - like guitar clangour - were destined not to appear on the new Manchester indie ..... New Hormones proved a bold and eclectic label. Its second vinyl release (ORG 3) came courtesy of The Tiller Boys, whose posthumous Factory extended play 7" (now titled Big Noise from the Jungle) was released in March 1980."

ii) THE FACTORY EDITIONS (Book[s])

This was to have been a "set of three books" as mentioned the NME 18 October 1980, which lists Factory's "autumn worksheet", including a number of the "usual suspects" (Joy Division 'Atmosphere' 12", A Certain Ratio 'Flight' 12", Crispy Ambulance 'Deaf' 10", 'A Factory Quartet', plus releases by John Dowie, The Names, Minny Pops, Section 25, JD 'Transmission' 12", New Order 'untitled single', ESG single [Factory press description: "PiL meets Motown on the wrong side of the Triborough Bridge!"] and the first Factory video) and then, tucked away at the very end of the very last line...

"... and a series of three books, the 'FACTORY EDITIONS'."

Many Factory projects were unfinished or unreleased (more on those to come) but some simply never got off the ground:

Fac 20 A Certain Ratio Too Young to Know, Too Wild to Care: A film, never made, which was to feature most of the Factory roster, but mainly A Certain Ratio and The Distractions attempting various forms of terrorism around Manchester, kidnapping Ian Curtis and blowing up Joy Division. (Soundtrack was to be by The Durutti Column). Shareholder's statement: "The film has become a video...has become a series of surrealistic sketches. Will change again. No date No time."

Fac 27 Sex Machine Alternative Sleeve: An alternative sleeve for Fac 17, but never issued/completed. This was an abandoned project for an alternative sleeve for Fac 17, but it was never printed. Fac 159 (Tim Difford's Fac Facts Booklet) states 'Cancelled Saville/Gretton revenge programme project for alternative FAC 17 sleeve. £200.00'. The Factory Shareholder's statement says: "£500.00. Rob's got it. Cancelled Saville revenge project for alternate Fac 17 sleeve."

Fac 101 (Tony Wilson's) Lofts: the visionary developer AHW's aborted plan to convert disused warehouses into loft apartments.

Fac 109 Caroline Lavelle Untitled: an unreleased 12" single. Caroline says: "I remember doing the Durutti Column and another few things for Factory and although I did undertake to do some recording under my own name I don't think anything came of it."

Fact 181 Bailey Brothers Mad Fuckers!: possibly the greatest unrealised project rumbled on from 1987 to 1992 and would have been a "youth exploitation" movie. Tony Wilson went to Hollywood to try to raise money for its projected £2.5m budget, an event which itself was Fac 221.

Fac 211 'Book of Ideas': mentioned in the Fact 400 Palatine booklet but never realised. Number also allocated to the Wired Joy Division documentary film.

Fac 237 New Order Here Are the Old Men: unreleased video concept whose proposed title plays on the title of the Fact 37 video by Joy Division.

Fact 254 Durutti Column Guitar One - House and Fact 264 Durutti Column Guitar Two - Acoustic: unreleased Durutti Column projects, presumably in the styles hinted at in the titles.

Fac 270 Various Artists Our Dance Days: a planned 1990 release to consist of Marcel King, 52nd Street, Section 25, and Quando Quango "House remixes" organised by Mike Pickering. The long lost never realised Factory Dance project in essence.

Fac 301 'First 50': a book to have been written by Ikon's Tim Chambers about the first 50 Fac numbers. Number also allocated to the Factory International Congress held at Mottram Hall, Cheshire.

Fac 342 Happy Mondays Charter Clinic

Fac 396 Two Guitarists Still Life: Unrealised Factory Classical project. The only missing piece from 226 to 406.
