Time Was Gigantic - photograph by Ed Templeton

The Factory Too era saw a new selection of graphic designers ushered in to work with the small but perfectly formed roster of artists assembled by Tony Wilson. Ed Templeton, the artist, photographer and professional skateboarder was a key element of this phase, working not only with Hopper but also on wider label-spanning projects like the Fac 2.24 1996 Christmas card.

However, it didn't stop there. One one of my many visits to the AHW Archives at the Science and Industry Museum I uncovered a selection of captioned photographs by Ed including the following pair - "WHEN WE WERE KIDS ..." and "TIME WAS GIGANTIC" (in that order). Roll on October 1998 and The Durutti Column's new album Facd 2.31 'Time Was Gigantic... When We Were Kids' is released on compact disc and the rest is history. A dexterous swapping of the sequence and the moving of an ellipsis and there you have your brand new album title.

Ed Templeton's Wayward Cognitions

We are pleased no end to see a photographic monograph of the work of skateboarder / artist / photographer / social documentarian Ed Templeton who's noted in Factory Records circles for his work with Factory Too and Hopper in the Nineties.

Wayward Cognitions is published on 31 October 2014 by Um Yeah Press and is highlighted today by Jamie Bradley Sims in the New York Times.

Ed Templeton: A Gentle Collision

Factory Too designer (for Hopper) and skateboarding legend Ed Templeton latest major gallery exhibition is 'A Gentle Collision' at Jerome Zodo Contemporary in Milan, Italy. It gathers together 7 major works and 3 installations.

The exhibition continues until 22 November 2013.

Ed Templeton - The Cemetery of Reason

Latest Ed Templeton (ex-Factory Too designer) news from Iconoclast Editions:

"April sees the release of a free exhibition poster giveaway for Ed Templeton's museum survey The Cemetery of Reason. This is the official exhibition poster for Ed's first large scale solo museum retrospective. The Cemetery of Reason is conceived as a mid-career survey of the American artist Ed Templeton, assembling clusters of images of the photos, paintings and sculptures he has executed over the last fifteen years. The exhibition tells the story of a pro skateboarder, a photographer, a draftsman, a painter, etc. A story which, although it focuses on his own life and those of the people around him, transcends the autobiographical and exposes social and societal phenomena unhesitatingly but without pointing a finger."

The official poster is effectively being given away for the princely sum of 0.01 USD (plus p+p).

Ed Templeton in the New York Times

Ed Templeton, whose solo exhibition 'The Judas Goat' continues at Modern Art in Hackney is the subject of an article [free registration required] by Rob Walker in the latest New York Times Sunday Magazine.

Whilst it doesn't mention the London exhibition it does heavily feature the Toy Machine Bloodsucking Skateboard Company, which he set up in 1993 ("planning ahead for the day he got too old to skate professionally").

Iconoclast update

Ed Templeton's solo exhibition The Judas Goat recently opened at Modern Art in Hackney, London and is well worth a visit. It features around 300 works, mainly photos and drawings / paintings from Templeton's entire career though sadly his Hopper artwork did not make it. Templeton has annotated many of the works in his own handwriting. Here is an example: "Silva and Karolina try to extend the mileage of a cigarette - Silva fiends for a nicotine hit from the lungs of Karolina - smoke swap that is dangerously close to being a kiss - it causes a burn in the loins being this close to this - an impromptu party in my pool - people stripped down - two Finnish girls after a temporary highs - my house, Huntington Beach, California year 2004". The exhibition runs until 6 March.

Beautiful Losers, which also features Templeton's work, opens at the Orange County Museum of Art on 6 February and runs through 15 May. The opening night party is on Saturday the 5th. Also running concurrently is an installation at OCMA's Orange Lounge located at the South Coast Plaza in Newport Beach. The Orange Lounge will be featuring the entire Film & Video portion of Beautiful Losers as well as a major collaborative installation entitled "You Are Here" by the infamous collective The Art Dump of Girl Skateboards.

The Iconoclast website will be launching in about 3 weeks. The site will feature a wealth of resource information on its illustrious roster of artists. Exclusive Iconoclast Editions will also be available directly on the site. Later this spring a limited number of only 30 complete Beautiful Losers Silkscreen Portfolios will be available on the site. Each Portfolio will include over 30 silkscreens by Beautiful Losers artists packaged in a custom box with numbered title page.

On Sunday February 6th, the agnes b. store located at 100 North Robertson in Los Angeles will be hosting a reception for the Beautiful Losers Silkscreen Portfolio including several newly available prints. There will be a special guest DJ as well as the premier screening of Cheryl Dunn's new short film entitled "Tokyo Hands". Call +1 310.271.9643 for more information.

Beautiful Losers

Part 1 of the Beautiful Losers Silkscreen Portfolio is now available, featuring work by Ed Templeton, the designer of record covers for Hopper.

Each print has been published in an edition of 200, numbered and signed by the artists. Iconoclast Editions is proud to offer prints by the following artists as Part 1 of the Beautiful Losers Portfolio: Mike Mills, Ed Templeton, Chris Johanson, Harmony Korine, Jo Jackson, Tobin Yelland, Terry Richardson, Cheryl Dunn, Geoff McFetridge, Cynthia Connolly, Ari Marcopoulos, Rostarr, Craig R. Stecyk III, Glen E. Friedman, Evan Hecox, Andy Jenkins, Wes Humpston, Ryan McGinness and Henry Chalfant.

The Beautiful Losers Portfolio will be complete when Part 2 is published and available in February 2005 in conjunction with the exhibit's Opening at the Orange County Museum of Art on February 5th, 2005. Each print measures 16x20 inches and is available individually as well as a complete set. The first 30 [Numbers 1 through 30] of each edition will be offered only as a complete Beautiful Losers Portfolio. Creativity Now

The Second Annual Creativity Now Conference runs from 2-3 October 2004 at the The Great Hall of The Cooper Union in New York's East Village. Speakers include Brian Eno, Penny Martin/SHOWstudio, Raymond Pettibon and Ed Templeton, the former designer for Factory Too band Hopper. Templeton features in a lecture entitled 'Skateboarding’s Influence on Popular Culture' alongside Jeff Tremaine, Thomas Campbell and Damon Way.
