The Belly of an Architect25 Aug 2006
Russell Brand on Shaun Ryder"Filming for a new cult movie, based on the life of a 1970s post-punk legend, was brought to Loughborough's Great Central Railway this week. 'Control' is a new, highly anticipated film based on the life of the late Ian Curtis - ex-frontman of the legendary band Joy Division... This week it was Loughborough's turn to take centre stage and film crews headed straight to the Great Central Railway. A spokesman for the railway said: "We agreed to let them do the filming here and, initially, it was just to take a shot of two people walking down the station's stairs. But once they were here and had had a look around, they decided they wanted to incorporate more into it. In the end they made use of other parts of the platform and the trains too!""

The Manchester District Music Archive is working with Manchester City FC on a proposed exhibition that will explore the relationship between the city's two major loves: football and music. The exhibition will open late September and will feature a range of exciting artefacts including Stone Roses and Oasis rarities, alongside footage of City greats talking about their favourite music.
We would love to hear from anyone who has any relevant stories or artefacts. Perhaps you've seen a gig at Maine Road or watched games with a well-known Manchester musician...

A pure fluke of historyAnthony (H) Wilson recalls the rise of independent record labels including Factory Records in the Eighties in the new edition of The Word (September 2006, #43, p90).
His re-telling of Rob Gretton's reasoning for establishing Factory is somewhat sanitised (either by AHW or The Word) this time round.

Designing Pornotopia: Travels in Visual Culture by Rick PoynorRead this extract from the Amazon.co.uk Synopsis:
In this collection of essays about visual culture, Rick Poynor directs a critical eye at brands, billboards, magazines, architecture, tattoos and trends in cosmetic surgery. A key target is the pervasiveness of sexual imagery in the market place and the media's symbiotic relationship with porn. He revisits the early, 'new wave' work of Peter Saville and Malcolm Garrett and tracks the unstoppable rise of Stefan Sagmeister. 'Designing Pornotopia' challenges the climate of mediocrity that dominates much of our commercial environment, highlights alternatives and considers the way forward.

Peter Saville's "entry" consists of the original 'M' in its packaging, signed by Saville and returned with a note which says "I was as excited as everyone else by the advent of a fully-fledged music channel twenty-five years ago. My initial optimism faded though as the culture of pop began it's (sic) descent into pure entertainment. Corporately controlled karaoke is not very interesting to me, but then I guess that nothing sells like teen spirit. I would rather it had stayed in the box.."
